The Gullah-Geechee people, descendants of West and Central Africans, carried more than language and memory across the Atlantic to the Sea Islands and coastal rice fields of South Carolina and Georgia. They carried knowledge of the spirit world. What happens in the physical world first happens in the spiritual, the elders say. And some spirits do not rest.

They call them haints. Among the most feared is the Plat-eye.
