The river itself is a contradiction, a blackwater artery twisting 310 miles from the marshes near Vero Beach through cypress swamps, past Orlando’s sprawl, and into the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville. It carries the scent of decay and hyacinth rot, its surface often glass-still until something disturbs it from below....
